Purpose: To evaluate the pattern of the signal intensity on diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI)and apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)values of normal pelvic bone marrow in adult, and analyze the relationship with gender and age between the pattern on DWI,the ADC values. Methods: A total of 230 healthy subjects with normal pelvic underwent diffusion-weighted imaging using spin-echo echo planar imaging for b=0,500 s/mm2.All subjects were divided into five groups based on ages(20-30 years old,31-40 years old,41-50 years old,51-60 years old,61 years old and above). The DWI pattern of pelvic bone marrow was performed based on the signal intensity distribution characteristics, with normal pelvic bone marrow divided into three types. The ADC values of ilium, ischium and pubis were measured.Using the kappa test and the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC)to evaluate the inter-observer agreement in the signal pattern of DWI and the measurement of ADC values. The difference on the pattern of DWI and the ADC values was evaluated by Chi-Square test and Independent-Samples t-test to evaluate the differences on the pattern on DWI and the ADC values between gender and ages. Then using spearman test to analyze the relationship between the pattern on DWI,the ADC values of normal pelvic bone marrow and age. Results: 1.The DWI pattern of pelvic bone marrow was different in gender between 20 to 50 years old while there were no significant differences in gender after 50 years old.The DWI pattern of pelvic bone marrow had significant differences in male aged around 30 years old,in female around 50 years old. There was negative correlation between the pattern of DWI and ages in male and famale.2.The ADC value of the female was greater than those of the male excepting pubis at the age between 20 to 50 years old, while the ADC value of the female was greater than that of the male in pubis after the age of 50 years old. There was negative correlation between the ADC value of pelvic bone marrow and age in female, while no correlation in male.3.The ADC value of pelvic bone marrow in male had no significant differences among the three patterns. The ADC value of the pattern ? was greater than the pattern ???in female. The ADC value of the pattern ? in female was greater than that in male. There was positive correlation between the pattern on DWI and the ADC value of pelvic bone marrow in female, while no correlation in male. Conclusion: 1.The DWI pattern of pelvic bone marrow was different in gender between 20 to 50 years old.The DWI pattern had significant difference in male aged around 30 years old,in female around 50 years old. There was negative correlation between the pattern on DWI and age.2.The ADC value of the pelvic bone marrow was different in gender between 20 to 50 years old. There was negative correlation between the ADC value of pelvic bone marrow and age in female.3.The ADC value of pelvic bone marrow in female was different in the three patterns, and the ADC value of same pattern was different in gender. There was positive correlation between the pattern on DWI and the ADC value of pelvic bone marrow in female.
