Background:Left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH) was suggested to be an important risk factor for cardiovascular complications. Previous studies had also shown that red cell distribution width(RDW) was associated with morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease. However, few have yet investigated possible association between RDW levels and LVH in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation patients.Method:Laboratory tests and echocardiography were conducted in 87 diagnosed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation patients coming from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to verify the independent association between RDW and LVH.Result:58 patients without LVH and 29 patients with LVH were rolled in the study. The patients with LVH had higher RDW,meanSBP,IVST,LVPWT,LAD and LVMI compared with non-LVH group. The LVEF was significantly lower in patients with LVH than patients without LVH.The multiple logistic regression model suggested that RDW is an independent predictor of LVH in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation(OR=5.806,95%CI:1.798-18.748, P<0.05).Other predictive factors for LVH were mean SBP and FBG.The receiver operating characteristics(ROC) curves indicated area under the curve was 0.785 (95%CI 0.6879 to 0.8816, P<0.05) with a cut-off value of 12.95,the RDW predicted LVH status among paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with a sensitivity of 82.76% and a specificity of 62.07%.Conclusion:RDW levels were significantly increased in LVH group, and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with left ventricular hypertrophy, RDW may be a predictor of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy.
