Background:This study investigated whether Mai Men Dong can reduce the incidence of radiation-induced lung injury and its effect on plasma TGF-?1? Method:To use a prospective randomized controlled design, esophageal cancer and lung cancer patients who meet the inclusion criteria from Jiangxi Provincial Tumor Hospital Department were randomly divided into treatment group and control group, The control group were treated by merely radiotherapy, while the treatment group were treated by radiotherapy and traditional chinese herbal maimengdong decoction. At the beginning of radiotherapy,post-radiation 40 Gy and 1 month after radiation, general condition, clinical symptoms, chest CT,lung injury(RTOG criteria) were evaluated. To compare the two groups the incidence of and radiation- induced lung injury and plasma cytokine TGF-?1 level before and after radiotherapy. Result:1.Between the treatment group and the control group, gender, age, KPS score, smoking, radiation dose, combined with chemotherapy, tumor type, histological type, the difference was not statistically significant(P <0.05).2.The incidence of radiation-induced lung injury in the treatment group was 16.67%(5/30), significantly lower than the control group, 40%(12/30), and the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05)3.There is no significant different of plasma TGF-?1 levels between two groups of patients before radiotherapy;40Gy radiotherapy and one month after the end of radiotherapy, the plasma TGF-?1 level of radiation-induced lung injury group on stage <2 were lower than the level of radiation pneumonitis on stage ? 2, the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).4.TGF-1 levels of the treatment group and the control group in pre, post- radiation 40 Gy and 1 month after radiation were(3.38±1.92)ng/ml,(25.23±5.11)ng/ml and(5.74±2.64)ng/ml; while in the control group(3.86±1.85)ng/ml,(30.85±5.57)ng/ml and(9.36±3.11)ng/ml?there were statistically significant differences in the post-radiation 40 Gy and 1 month after radiation(P<0.05).5. After radiotherapy 3 months, the number of ease cases in the treatment group and the control group(complete response and partial response) were 25 cases and 23 cases; the number of cases in the treatment group and the control group who were not relieved and progress were 5 cases and 7 cases, There was no significant difference(P> 0.05). Conclusion:maimengdong decoction can prevent the occurrence of radiation-induced lung injury;the decoction can reduce plasma TGF-?1 levels.
