Developing Cloud-based Mobile Software Platform For Smart Farming

Abstract/Summary:
Agricultural informatization is the precondition for developing modern agriculture.It applies information technologies to promote upgrading traditional agriculture to a modern one,which carries out high-efficient agricultural production,increases farmers’ income and builds a new countryside.The smart farming platform is the core of the agricultural informatization.It integrates the Intermet of Things(IoT)with information technologies for collecting,processing,analyzing and applying agricultural data,implements real-time crop growth monitoring and precision management with agricultural knowledge model,and increases the efficiency of agricultural production.However,most conventional smart farming system is designed for PC,which is not entirely popular among the peasants in most rural areas of China.Today,mobile Internet gradually catches up with the cable Internet,while mobile devices become more popular compared with PC.Therefore,our research focused on building a smart farming system for mobile devices with mobile Internet technology.And it integrates GIS technology,cloud services and data-mining technology for monitoring crop growth,supporting decision making,and pushing agro-information services.Our research was carried out through three aspects.Construction of smart farming cloud services.Users can conveniently get the crop growth information,environmental information,and soil information from a mobile device anytime,anywhere,with the help of cloud-based agro-information services.Agro-information cloud services consist of data services and function services,and are implemented in REST style with a lightweight data interaction,which can reduce the network traffic of the mobile devices.Data services include basic data services,environment monitoring data services and crop growth monitoring data services,while function services are the integration of cultivation scheme design service and the diagnosis and regulation service.The individual function service derived from agricultural model and knowledge library allows users to obtain decision support service in the field,and make appropriate treatments to ensure the high-efeicient agricultural production.Precisely push notification services.The proposed platform introduces the notification push service,pushing individual notification according to precise geographic location and time.With the precise spatiotemporal location,the accurate data services and function services can be achieved.Moreover,based on the sample dataset and the CART algorithm,the precise notification containing data services and function services is sent to the user,who really requests for it.In order to achieve this function,we built an information push server based XMPP protocol;it can push the notification to the user automatically.The precise notification delivers the customized decision support information to the users and improves the applicability of the service.Implementation of mobile software platform.We developed the mobile software platform for smart farming with Android techniques.The advanced features of Android combined with relevant knowledge and agricultural model guarantees the implementation the functions of the platform,including agro-IoT,cultivation scheme design,diagnosis-regulation,et al.These functions greatly increase the efficiency of data access and smart farming.With the developed mobile software platform,we manage 17 demonstration areas of the National Agricultural Information Engineering Technology Center,Nanjing Agricultural University.The operation and the performance of the proposed mobile platform show that the software design and the implementation meet the requirement of crop growth monitoring and smart farming decision support.The platform achieves the fiunctions of data collection,management,analysis and application with Agro-IoT.The UI is simple and neat,easy for farmers to use.Users can get the expected information of the demonstration area anytime,anywhere,and can make decisions timely with the help of precise notification services.The design and the implementation of the platform will be an important exploration in Information Agriculture.
