Fang Zhongda And The Study Of Plant Diseases

Fang Zhongda(1916.05—1999.12),who come from wujin,Changzhou,Jiangsu province,is a famous plant pathologist,and the main founder of Chinese plant dise ase bacteria science.He devoted all his time to academic research and made an out standing contribution to the development of Chinese plant diseases.Using Fang Zho ngda and plant diseases as the research object,not only can we realize his learning and research experience,but also we can fully understand the history background a nd the development path of Chinese plant disease science,which has an important i ntellectual merit and reality-oriented meaning in the research of Chinese biology and plant disease science.In academic research,Professor Fang Zhongda was a knowledgeable and rigoro us scholarship.He has studied each branch of Plant Pathology and published more t han 200 papers and 4 academic monographs.He has obtained numerous achievemen ts,especially in the study on bacterial blight of rice,and his research scope involve d bacteria physiology,strains of rice resistant varieties of differentiation,identificatio n and disease resistant mechanism,etc.In addition,he has achieved break-through r esults in the detection method and the way of infection of the soft rot of Chinese cabbage,bacterial wilt,rice bacterial stalk rot pathogen.From 1982 to 1983,he stu died the research of the nematode disease prevention and treatment,and found that the most important reason for mass death of pine Nanjing Dr.Sun Yat-sen's Mausol eumarea was a pine wilt nematode pest from American.He was the first one in th e domestic who made special subject report and put forward the scientific evidence,andhas removed the disease successfully.In the fungal diseases,he made research in anti Verticillium cotton pathogenic and achieved remarkable results.In virus disea ses,He made a breakthrough contribution to legume virus disease control.For the development of Nanjing Agricultural University Plant Pathology,Fang Zhongda did the basic work.Modern plant pathology is introduced from the west t o theChina,and experienced a process from scratch,in which Fang Zhongda played a key role.He studied America and devoted into putting the western advanced tec hnology to domestic plant disease,striving to build the Nanjing Agricultural Univers ity plant disease Science.And finally it reach the domestic leading level.In recent years,Nanjing Agricultural University has gradually catch up with international level.In order to insure the inheritance of plant disease,Fang Zhongda took a first-cl ass master's and doctoral research team,and trained a large plant disease people.C onsidering the students' different situation,he set different course and research topic forundergraduate and doctoral student.When engaged in the education of Plant Pat hology,Fang Zhongda didn't limit to the Nanjing Agricultural University,but also p aid attention to the whole China agriculture education.He organized the excellent te achers to write two sets of textbooks:General Plant Pathology and Research metho ds of plant disease,which were praised by plant specialist appreciation and became an important textbook and reference the relevant professional college.These books established a solid theory foundation to our plant disease.The reason of Fang Zhon gda's success was not only the unremitting struggle cultivation,personal and family and school is inseparable,but also was its strong sense of responsibility of the time s the heart,which encouraged him to continue to move forward.
