Nursery stock are seedling trees for afforestation. According to the situation of roots at nursery and whether there is soil surrounding roots when transplantation, the seedlings was divided into bare root seedlings and container seedlings. Container seedlings were widely used in forestry afforestation due to advantages of short nursery cycle, easy management of seedling specification and quality, seeds economy, high survival rate, seedling production and facilitation of mechanization, which is particularly important for endangered species, rare species and species of seeds difficult to collect. Phoebe zhennan is one of the secondary protection species and an excellent gardening, urban greening species. Because of long been irrational use and harvesting as well as some natural factors, Phoebe zhennan resources was seriously damaged nationally, especially wild Phoebe zhennan resources has been increasingly depleted. With the development of society and economy, demand for rare wood furniture, high-end market is growing, leading to increasing contradiction of Phoebe zhennan timber supply and demand. Therefore, development of Phoebe zhennan plantation and cultivation gradually attract the concentration from our community. Currently, international and national reports upon Phoebe zhennan focuses on aspects of their timber value, etc., however, it is rarely reported about the breeding oi Phoebe zhennan. Thus, this experiment studied the effect of the nutrition bags of different substrate compositions on Phoebe zhennan seedling growth, photosynthetic characteristics and continuous effect after transplantation, which provide a theoretical foundation and scientific basis for the frames of container nursery.In this experiment, matrix was made by mixing farmland soil (N), coniferous forest topsoil (Z), broadleaf forest surface humus (K) as well as nutrition soil humus (Y) with certain proponent duck manure, sandy loam. Phoebe zhennan seedlings nursery was finished by using seedling transplanting method. The growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Phoebe zhennan seedlings was dynamically recorded. During the next year, transplanted saplings were continuously recorded for one year. We analyzed the influence of different substrates on the growth of young trees, further screening the best matrix ratio for Phoebe zhennan nursery with nutrition. Preliminary results were as follows:(1) When the coniferous forest topsoil (Z) was used as the main base. Phoebe zhennan seedlings grew best under low-ratio treatment Zl (coniferous forest topsoil". duck manure:sandy loam=8:1:1), while grew worst under high-ratio treatment Z3 (coniferous forest topsoil:duck manure:sandy loam= 5:4:1).(2) When the farmland soil (N) was used as the main matrix, Phoebe zhennan seedlings grow best under CK treatment NO (farmland soil:duck manure:sandy loam = 9:0:1), however they grew worst under high-ratio treatment N3 (farmland soil: duck manure:sandy loam=5:4:1).(3) When the surface humus of broadleaf forest (K) was used as the main matrix, Phoebe zhennan seedlings grew best under low-ratio treatment Kl (broadleaf forest humus Surface:duck manure:sandy loam= 8:1:1), while grew worst under high-ratio treatment K3 (broad-leaved forest humus surface:duck manure:sandy loam= 5:4:1).(4) When the nutritious soil humus (Y) was used as the main base, Phoebe zhennan seedlings grew best under high-ratio treatment CK ((nutrition soil:sandy loam= 4:6), while grew worst under treatment Y3 (nutrition soil:sandy loam= 10:0) and the mortality is the highest for Phoebe zhennan seedling under this treatment Y0 as well.(5) For the four kinds of soil, agricultural soil (N) was a more suitable soil as a substrate for nursery Phoebe zhennan compared to the other three soil which were mixed at a certain ratio, and Phoebe zhennan seedlings grows best under NO treatment.(6) at the next year, these 1-year-old Phoebe zhennan seedlings were transplanted to greenhouse with general management of a period of one year and continuous recording. Under the same management level, the plants of slow growing treatment during the first year grew slowly as well, which could not be eased in time. This indicated that impact of substrate Phoebe zhennan seedling growth is sustainable. In summary, different substrate compositions affect the growth of Phoebe zhennan seedling differently. High matrix fertility would inhibit seedling growth, while low fertility would slow seedling growth. Only when the substrate with a reasonable ratio, can Phoebe zhennan seedling growth be facilitated. For these kinds soil used, farmland soil (N) was the best choice for Phoebe zhennan nutrition bag nursery, however nutritional soil humus (Y) was not suitable for Phoebe zhennan seedling growth.
