As the third largest grassland in China, carbon sequestration capacity of the grassland ecosystem in Xinjiang can not be ignored, but the research on it is less. This research is to study the grassland in Xinjiang. Through of different classification criteria, we studied the carbon density and carbon sequestration potential of Xinjiang grassland vegetation and soil. We got the following conclusions:Firstly, the vegetation total carbon density in different grassland forms is significant difference(P<0.05). The grassland form with the highest vegetation carbon density is the form of Stipa purpurea(1312.45g/m2), and the lowest is Salsola arbuscula, Ceratoides latens(116.65g/m2). While, the largest potential density of carbon sequestration is Phragmites australis(3427.0g/m2), the smallest is Salsola arbuscula, Ceratoides latens(146.8g/m2). Root carbon storage account for the total vegetation carbon sequestration potential density 54%-96%, and the average is 85%.The highest potential of the soil organic carbon sequestration in each grassland form is the type of Stipa capillata(36.61kg/m2), the lowest is Salsola arbuscula,Ceratoides latens(5.42kg/m2).Secondly, the carbon density of different grassland types had significant difference(P<0.05). The highest total carbon density of vegetation is the alpine meadow(2246.33g/m2), and the lowest is temperature of desert steppe(217.33g/m2). The greatest potential of carbon sequestration is the alpine steppe(2714.29g/m2), and the smallest is the alpine desert steppe(320.15g/m2).In all types of grassland soil organic carbon sequestration potential density, the largest grassland type is temperate steppe(35.74kg/m2), and the smallest is the alpine desert steppe(6.76kg/m2).The carbon sequestration potential in different grassland types is different. The largest carbon sequestration potential of grassland type is temperate desert(184.07Tg), and the smallest is the alpine desert steppe(2.05Tg).Thirdly, there were significant differences in carbon density and carbon sequestration potential density of soil organic carbon, litter, root and total vegetation in different regions(P<0.05). In this study, the carbon density of root accounts for 63%-99% of the total vegetation carbon density, while the carbon sequestration potential density of root accounts for 65%-99% of the total carbon sequestration potential density.
