Green ornamental plants can not only purify the air inside but beautify the living spaces. Moreover, they can also help people to relax and relive the pressure. Habitable rooms are the basic and limited places for people to rest, study, and entertain. So people bring in and cultivate green plants so as to purify and beautify the living environment. In this way, they can get close to the nature at home and, by the way, enrich the connotation of interior culture. In this small environment, there exist the interactions between people and plants, which is one of the research contents of Ethno-botany and Ethno-ecology.As a case study, we conducted a survey of ornamental plants among 214 families of urban area in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. We use the method of household observation, taking pictures of the plants, identification, and classification and so on. The results show that there is a total of 161 species,12 varieties,1 hybrids,10 cultivar and 1clonally variety, categorized in 59 families,132 genera. The species consist of 3 ferns,1 gymnosperms, and angiosperms 157 species,12 varieties,1 hybrids,10 cultivar and 1 clonally varieties. The most frequent plant family is Cactaceae, containing 24 species; followed by Liliaceae, containing 22 species; the third is Crassulaceae, containing 19 species; and the fourth is Araceae, containing 15species. The four plant families of Cactaceae, Liliaceae, Crassulaceae and Araceae contain a total of 80 species (the grade of infraspecific taxon included), which account for 43.24% of all species, at the level of plant families, these four subjects are more significant groups.30 families contain only one species (or the grade of infraspecific taxon), accounting for 50.85% of all the number of families, and 16.22% of all species. These indoor ornamental plants in the families in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia are native to America, Asia, and Africa, mainly based on flowering plants and foliage plants. The plants, whose frequency of occurrence is more than 10%, contain Epipremnum aureum, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Clivia miniata, Echinocactus grusonii, Euphorbia trigona,Chlorophytum comosum, Anthurium scherzerianum, Dracaena sanderiana, Crassula ovata, Sansevieria trifasciata, Aloe vera, Euphorbia milii, Ficus elastica and so on.In this research, the indoor ornamental plants in the families of urban area in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia are composed of 48 species,1 hybrids,5 cultivar and 1clonally variety that are without Mongolian names, taking up 29.73% of all the species. Thus, the author use the names originated from the Latin or Chinese names as well as their morphological characteristics to entitle these plants in Mongolian. In general, the average number of the plants that are in each household is small. There are significant differences between the local residents to choose their ornamental plants. What's more, less species were generally accepted. In the selection of ornamental plants, the local residents present an extreme individuation and randomness. It is shown from the diversity, frequency, and average number of species that the usage of ornamental plant is still at the average state in Hohhot urban area. It also shows the economic development and living standard of the local people from the other side.
