Heavy metal in the soil is toxic to most plants and animals including human beings.Eruca sativa Mill belongs to Cruciferae family and is tolerant to cold and drought.The seed oil can be used as industrial oil.In this paper the tolerance to and accumulation of 7 heavy metals,including cadmium,chromium,copper,mercury,nickel,lead and zinc,were studied in Eruca sativa Mill.Our results indicated that all these seven metals affected first the shoot growth,then the root growth.The effect on seed germination was not significant.Cd at 0.3 mmol/Ldecreased the root growth by 70%,shoot growth by 13%;Cr at 0.4mmol/L decreased the root length by 74%,shoot growth by 58%;Cu at 0.6 mmol/Ldecreased the root growth by 78%,shoot growth by 33%;Hg at 0.3mmol/L decreased the root length by 77%,shoot length by 35%;Ni at2 mmol/L decreased the root length by 29%,shoot length by about 20%;Pb at 2 mmol/L decreased the root length by 40%,shoot length by 15%.It is noteworthy that Zn at 3 mmol/Lpromoted the root length shoot length by 83%and 30%,respectively.Our results suggest that Eruca sativa is highly tolerant to Ni,Pb and Zn and moderately tolerant to Cd,Cr,Cu and Hg.As to the heavy metal tolerance,HUBU-17 showed high Cd tolerance regarding shoot length and fresh seedling weight,while HUBU-18 and HUBU-10 showed high Cd tolerance regarding seed germination and root length.HUBU-14 showed high Cr tolerance regarding root and shoot growth,while Brassica juncea and HUBU-15 showed high Cr tolerance regarding seed germination and fresh seedling weight.HUBU-10 showed high Cu tolerance regarding seed germination and root growth,while HUBU-15 and HUBU-16 showed high Cu tolerance regarding shoot length and fresh seedling weight.HUBU-16 showed Hg toleranceregarding seed germination,HUBU-10 regarding root gowth;HUBU-19 regarding shoot length,and HUBU-13 regarding fresh seedling weight.HUBU-14 showed Ni tolerance regarding root and shoot length,while HUBU-18 and HUBU-12 showed Ni tolerance regarding seed germination and fresh seedling weight.HUBU-17-showed higher Pbtolerance-regarding seed germination and root growth,while HUBU-14 and HUBU-12 showed higher Pb tolerance regarding shoot length and fresh seedling weight.HUBU-18,HUBU-10,HUBU-17 and HUBU-16 showed Zn tolerance regarding seed germination,root length,shoot length and fresh seedling weight,respectively.HUBU-19 showed better enrichment for Cd,Cr,Ni and Zn,while HUBU-18 showed better enrichment for Cu and Pb.HUBU-17 showed better translocation for Cd,Cu,Pb and Zn,while HUBU-15 showed better translocation for Cr and Ni.HUBU-18 showed better removal of Cd,Cr and Cu from the soil,while HUBU-17 howed better removal of Ni,Pb and Zn from the soil.
