As one of the important assembly of off-road vehicles,the limited slip differential obviously affects the vehicles~5 off-road capability,and especially takes an important role in transit,etc.In this thesis the variable ratio differential for off-road vehicles is designed originally,analyzed in detail and tested preparatory.In this paper,researches are done in four aspects,and relevant conclusions are drawn.Firstly,different types of differentials are analyzed and compared in their competitive performance;the limited slip capability of the variable ratio differential is analyzed from mechanics and work process;the limited and proper locking factor is put forward,based on the analysis of the adhesive strength change between driving wheels and various pavements.Secondly,the variable ratio function is designed,which meets all the pre-requisite qualifications;in accordance with the principles in the Geometry of Differential Calculus the pitch curve on spherical surface is stretched to analyze in plane.Thirdly,the equation group of the plane involutes is given by means of tooth form normal and analysis;a group of satisfactory plane teeth form are designed,their baselines being drawn;another novel theory is put forward,that spherical tooth form is achieved from plane one,as is tested correct in computer simulation.Fourthly,it is discussed that the different machining techniques may be used for the bevel gear with variable ratio for different purposes;it is through the initial stage whet experiments and the competitive performance tests that the novel design methods of the variable ratio differential prove correct and the effect tests perfect.According to the study on theory and experiment,the designed and thirdly made variable ratio bevel gears run well.In result,the real locking factor reaches as much as 4.5,and furthermore the other merits,such as stability and safety,are more evident than the others.Therefore,the designed variable ratio bevel gears can meet the leading requests of military off-road vehicles.In addition,the results having been tested in the thesis can be used to guide the design and analysis of other noncircular-column-gear and noncircular-bevel-gear.
