| Under the times theme of Cultural Self-confidence and Traditional Renaissance,and the historical background which the culture of Buddhism is an requisite part of traditional culture in China,and the social atmosphere where people’s spiritual life is increasingly scarce,the Buddhist architecture should actively explore the method of modernization and innovation,and pay more attention to its spiritual essence as a religious architecture.The purpose of this thesis is to explore the spiritual essence of Buddhist architecture and to study its materialized expression in the environment of modern architecture."Fit the Doctrines and opportunity,follow the Doctrines and Dharma" is deemed to the rule of Dhamma practice in the Buddhist scriptures.This thesis uses its connotation to explain the basic criterion of spiritual space design in the modern Buddhist architecture."Fit the Doctrines and opportunity" means the design should follow the basic space design theory of modern architecture,and fit the background of times,and escape from the traditional inherent form."Follow the Doctrines and Dharma" is the design method which intends on expressing Buddhist doctrines and its philosophic thoughts.This thesis is divided into four parts.The first section includes the origin,and points out the fact that current Buddhist architecture cannot gratify the public’s demand for religious spiritual space.The second section is the research and analysis.It includes the evolution of traditional space pattern,the treatment of spiritual space,and the analysis of current situation and causes.The third section is the design strategy as the main body of the thesis.It includes Chapter 3 and 4 which summarize specific design methods of spiritual space in two aspects of spatial sequence and single space.The fourth section describes research on the practice project design which applies and explores the strategy above.Finally,it is expected that the research results of this thesis will ascend its humble effort to the utmost in the process of Buddhist architecture’s modernization.It is hoped to initiate design and study on spiritual space of Buddhist architecture,and to provide ideas and inspiration for future exploration. |
