In the near future, the electric propulsion system will be the main propulsion device for space missions. To carry out the deep space exploration mission such as manned to Mars,as well as constrcuction of space soloar power systems, high power, very high impulse and long life thrusters are in demand. There are many candidates for High power electric propulsions and anode layer type Hall thrusters are one of the candidates for them since they can be designed into multi-stage structures to offer an attractive combination of shorter channel length, high efficiency, and expected long lifetime.Channel length, anode structure, wall material, and the interaction between the charged plasma and the channel wall all have a decisive influence on the thrust performance and the lifetime of the anode Hall Hall thruster. In this paper, researches mainly focus on the factors defining the performance of TAL and the channel wall erosion problem. The main work in this paper is divided into following four parts:Firstly, doing some literature researches on the design case of the anode layer thruster, then based on the design power requirement, the magnetic field and structure of the experimental prototype TAL are designed.Thermal optimization is followed by the calculation and analysis of the temperature distribution of the whole prototype. Then, perform a performance test on the designed prototype. The effects of magnetic field, discharge voltage and anode mass flow rate on the performance of the anode Hall Hall thruster were studied. The optimum working conditions of the experimental prototype were determined. After that,The influence of the channel length, hollow anode structure and wall material on the performance of the thruster were studied by using the experimental as well as PIC / MC simulation method.Further more, how the changes of these parameters affect the performance of the thruster are explained from physical mechanism point. Finally,The wall erosion in the anode layer Hall thruster is studied by using the experimental and Huygensian sub-wave simulation method. Finally, according to the principles of wall erosion, the mathematic model is established for the evolution of channel wall morphology,Then, using the Huygensian sub-wave simulation method, the relationship between the depth of the erosion and the working time of the thruster as well as the ion energy is studied. Finally, the erosion depth of the wall is measured experimentally, and the erosion rate is calculated.
