The pace of human development and utilization of the oceans is accelerating with the lake of land space and energy sources.Coastal engineers often encounter engineering problems related to ultra-soft marine soils during the reclamation project and the energy exploitation,such as reinforcement of dredged silt,embedment of pipelines in seabed soft clay,foundation stability of the mooring system,etc.,it’s urgent to carry out the research on the correlation between strength and rheological properties of ultra-soft submarine clay,in order to provide reference for land reclamation and energy explore engineering.Based on fully discussion of the stability and reliability of RST rheometer,carried out a large number of rheological strength tests on typical ultra-soft marine soils in Bohai and south China sea area to analyze the characteristics of physical indexes,variation of strength and rheological properties of those soils.Conclusions drawn from this study are presented as follows:1.Verifying the repeatability of test result of the rheometer with plenty parallel tests and proving the reliability of the test results by compared with previous studies.Based on the investigation on the influence of rotor size,shear rate and shaft friction,present a method for testing the strength of ultra-soft soils.2.Analyzed basic physical parameters,and changing pattern between undrained shear strength and water content by carrying out a series of rheological strength tests on the typical ultra-soft soils.3.Based on the study of basic physical parameters,analyzing strength and rheological properties of soil samples of south China sea and compared with the test results of those of Bohai sea.4.Discussed the shortcomings of the conventional theological strength models in fitting ultra-soft soils’ strength,propose a piecewise fitting method based on the shear thinning theory and tests result,then establish a strength model applied to ultra-soft marine soils of Bohai and south China sea areas.
