This paper investigates the IoT(Internet of things) technology in the application of distribution line monitoring. In order to solve the problems such as the lack of real-time monitoring, faulted line selection and fault location, a line monitoring system with smart grid sensors and the cloud-based platform is proposed. The new generation of sensor is very small, self-powered and maintenance-free. The sampling data among the different sensors, which can be easily installed anywhere, is accurately time-synchronized. These data make the distribution line completely transparent. Since all the necessary wide-area data information is available, almost every existing fault-locating algorithm can be easily implemented in this system.Based on the time-synchronized data and the distributed waveform records, this paper proposes a unified cross-correlation algorithm to identify the faulted lines and fault location for different types of phase-to-phase and the single phase grounding faults. The simulation results by using the measured real data shows its effectiveness, which can avoid the problem of difficult parameter setting for traditional differential current algorithm applying in the main lines with load branch node. Finally, according to a big disturbance event captured and recorded by the system in field operation, the complete process of two typical 10 KV line faults and recovery is explained in detail, and the post-fault analysis is done to validate the correctness and practicability of the algorithms and system.
