Study Design Of Glazed Gridshells Building Based On Form Finding And Optimization

The methods of domestic and foreign scholars on skyline study can be divided into two categories:qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis.The way of quantitative analysis used commonly is the bar-chart of statistics.Another method of quantitative analysis of the skyline is to use fractal geometry.Fractal geometry developed by decades has been widely used in many subjects such as physics,meteorology,geography and even art and sociology and so on.The use of fractal geometry to the quantitative analysis of the study on the skyline of the urban streets is still frontier.The significance of the research is using the fractal dimension of urban street architecture skyline to get quantitatively accurate analysis,more comprehensive understanding about the mathematical characteristics contained in the architecture skyline and reveal the possibilities fractal geometry can be used in the architecture skyline design and control.Aiming at these problems,the author researches gridshells using the methods of real modeling and digital simulation.Firstly,the author explores the history and related concepts,and summarizes gridshells structures from different aspects.It takes several case studies to get the cognition of composing ways and geometric forms.Controlled experiments are conduced to find the difference forms by changing materials and form finding methods.By analyzing and inducting the result,the author summarizes the form finding methods and control factors.In the next step,the author redesigned the S.R.Crown Hall in IIT campus using the methods.In the process of redesign,the architectural design elements and the gridshells factors are taken into an unified consideration.Programs and spaces in the building are rationalized based on the optimization of gridshells structure.The result proofs to be reasonable no matter in architecture design or structure performance.
