Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks(VANETs)is a special kind of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks(MANETs),which achieves vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. As an important part of Intelligence Transportation System(ITS),VANETs has wide applications in many fields, such as vehicle internet access, traffic accident early warning, vehicle automated driving, and attracts extensive focus from researchers. In addtion to the basic features of MANETs,VANET has its own characteristics, such as the way of the road and the traffic limit, the speed of nodes. The rapid moving of nodes has an influential effect on the stability of communication link in VANETs.As the stability of communication link is the premise to guarantee the effective transmission of data between nodes,so the research of link stability is of great importance to design effective network protocols and improve the performance of the network. This paper firstly investigated and studied link dynamic of VANETs.By considering the limits of the width of road in practical network environment and the transmission range of the mobile node, effective transmission range was defined and an analytical model of link lifetimeand link lifetime distribution was proposed.Extensive simulations have been undertaken to verify the derived analytical expressions via generated mobility traces. This paper improved the existing routing protocols based on the analyzed dynamic characteristics of links in VANETs.This algorithm is based on AODV route algorithm and the link lifetime is used to improve the routing performance. It selects the longest path lifetime as the transmission path and creates a timer to look for new links. Therefore,we can avoid the breakage of links frequently. In this paper, the two routing algorithm are compared and evaluated with end to end delay, delivery ratio and the network throughput in the highway scenarios. The simulation results have shown that, the routing algorithm that is proposed in this paper has the better performance.
