As an important part of the automobile body,passenger car bumper system includes large pieces of plastic molding and assembly.It is connected to the front and rear of the car,and its role is to keep the car modeling,body protection,aerodynamic rectification and to ensure that the engine cooling into the wind,its performance directly affects the safety of vehicle driving.By the low-speed collision or other external load in the front of the bumper,the bumper can absorb and mitigate the impact of external forces through its deformation at the same time,the bumper plays an important role to protect passenger and pedestrian.In order to study the performance of low-speed collision of bumper,the first thing to do is to understand and master the basic mechanical properties of bumper,such as stiffness and strength.In this paper,using the finite element method to simulate the characteristics of the bumper,including the stiffness,strength and rebound deformation,and verified the model by experiments.The first job is to use the Hypermesh to mesh the various parts of the bumper and check and optimize for the grid cell.Then importing the grid model into the ABAQUS for assembly.In the assembly process,plastic buckle is a main component of the bumper and studying its new modeling methods could improve the simulation accuracy.Then complete the settings about boundary conditions and the type of contact between the various components of the bumper.To determine the required material properties,the tensile and bending test were carried out on specific materials of bumper – polypropylene.Then simulate the characteristics by using the finite element model,including the stiffness,strength and rebound deformation.At the same time,build the test platform of bumper to test the stiffness and strength of bumper.Finally,we compared and analyzed the simulation data and experimental results,and Combined with the requirements of the subject so that we could verify the stiffness and strength of the bumper.Those jobs can lay the foundation for further performance analysis of the bumper,and summarize the general research methods of the passenger car bumper.The above study can provide sufficient data support for the development of new models of bumper,and provide a proven model basis for the simulation of bumper.Thus greatly shortening the product development cycle,to win the initiative in the market competition,at the same time it can save a lot of cost.So this topic has a very important theoretical value,but also has a very realistic engineering significance.
