As a type of strategic new industry in high-end equipment manufacturing sector,rail transportation equipment serves as a strong underpinner in implementing the"Going Global" strategy of heavy equipment in China.While at the same time,rolling stock is the transportation tool within the complex railway system.As people's living standards increasing and "Going Global" strategy gaining momentum,NC company,as a leading rail transportation equipment manufacturer,is facing a market of diversified customer demands and orders of various kinds of products.In responding to such trend,efforts must be made to find a fast design process which is adaptable to the changing market,so that the enterprise can manage to maintain its leading market position by addressing changes in the market efficiently.On the basis of in-depth analysis regarding the status quo of product R&D in NC company,this paper proposes the problems encountered in its product R&D process.Document analysis method,case analysis method and cross-sectional study method are adopted to work out a fast design process which is based on material feature classification.By setting up product model and demand model,this design process establishes the aggregate of product and the aggregate of demand performance index in order to identify the corresponding relationship between product and demand,thus creating a product R&D process which is triggered and driven by customer demand changes.This design process also characterizes with the technical features of product by optimizing the original material coding rules in the company.In this way,this process can act as a carrier for the mapping relation passing between product and demand,embracing such design procedures as demand introduction,mapping relation building and feature matching during product R&D.As the result of feature matching varies,the afterwards design process can be divided into three parallel procedures,i.e.configuration design,variant design and new design.Regarding the implementation of the abovementioned design process,this paper also explores how to improve product case library,application of parametric design platform,information technology and other technical support activities during product R&D process.The design process provided in this paper is a new product R&D approach for companies manufacturing large and complex equipment.This can not only be deployed directly to rail transportation equipment manufacturers,but also provide reference to other similar manufacturers in their product R&D.This design process will play an active role in promoting the product design quality and capability of quick response to market changes in a company.In the meantime,application of this process will facilitate optimization of product R&D resource configuration and reduction of manufacturing cost.
