With the speedy development of the global economy and the continuous breakthrough about heavy duty commercial vehicle technology, the high speed and high power diesel engine has become the development tendency, but it has brought about the problem of the pollution of the tail gas. From the last century before and after 90’s until now, the global major counties such as the United States, EU, Japan and China, has developed the vehicle emission regulations at different stages, and the emission limits decrease gradually. Although the humans formulate environmental regulations for purpose of improving their living environment, but they have adapted to a comfortable and convenient living conditions of the car bringing them, and the cars have become a necessary tool in their lives. Confronted with this contradiction, human engineers had succeeded in mechanical, electronic, materials, chemical and other aspects of research, so that the automotive technology achieved a breakthrough to meet the increasingly stringent environmental standards.This paper analyzes the development trend of the diesel engine, emphatically introducing the domestic and foreign diesel engine technology development present situation. Mainly a FAW CA6DL2 IV heavy duty diesel engine as the research object, through the analysis of performance design and thermodynamics, measures on the possibility and the results of performance improvement and emission reached the CN V, which carries on standard targets, boundary conditions, the engine emission control strategies, combustion system configuration schemes; then based on the engine performance development and emissions test, comparative study on combustion optimization schemes, which mainly affect the performance and emissions of the fuel injector, turbocharger, cylinder and combustion chamber are compared with the evaluation, choose to meet the target of the optimal solution, and the final selection stage of freeze burning scheme; finally, the final scheme based on combustion using CANape prototype, develop the detailed bench calibration research of the engine by the self-calibration software, including the conventional module calibration of impacting performance and emissions and OBD calibration.This paper on the research design of CN V diesel engine performance and calibration method of heavy duty, establish a set of performance of diesel engine design and development of test methods, summarizes the scheme selection of the evaluation standard of combustion in diesel engine, summarizes the CN V calibration process, has the practical significance to the development and calibration to meet more stringent the emission regulations.
