Museum is an architectural type with important social function and cultural meanings. The contemporary museum has entered in the new period that regard experience as the center, and audience as authority.Today, taking audience experience as the center and paying attention to audience’s emotions has become a new trend in the development of museum design. Therefore, visiting route and exhibition space are core element in the contemporary museum architecture design.Chinese classical garden is a category of high achievement in Chinese traditional art and architecture. The Jiangnan classical garden is a outstanding representative of Chinese classical garden, and its rich spatial experience and exquisite design skills are recognized widely.Recent years,a number of architects and scholars advocate to recognize the traditional garden culture from the perspective of contemporary architectural design. The paper selects several Jiangnan classical gardens and contemporary museums to make comparative study, attempting to apply the design skills of Jiangnan classical gardens to the contemporary museum space reasonably. From the perspective of route organization and space construction, this paper makes deep analysis of the relevance on contemporary museum space and Jiangnan classical garden space, and discusses the methods how contemporary museum space inherit and translate Jiangnan classical garden in architecture space design. This paper not only brings the expectation of inheriting and developing the art of Jiangnan classical garden space in contemporary architecture, but also carries on an useful trial of meeting the diversified demands of exhibition space experience in contemporary museums. The structure of this paper comprises three parts. The first part makes relevancy analysis between contemporary museum space and Jiangnan classical garden space.First analyses the development characteristics and requirements of the contemporary museum space with extensive literature survey, cases analysis and field investigation. Then introduces the analysis of Jiangnan classical gardens and displays juxtaposition of Jiangnan classical gardens and contemporary museums. The analysis describes necessity and feasibility of using for reference from Jiangnan classical gardens, which providing a theoretical basis for the research of this thesis. The second part analyzes how contemporary museum applies routh design from Jiangnan classical garden. The analysis consists of two aspects(walking route and visual route). This part selects routes in Jiangnan classical gardens and contemporary museums and makes juxtaposition study mainly through qualitative graphic analysis and quantitative DepthMap space syntax analysis. The last part studies how contemporary museumapplies space design methods in Jiangnan classical garden by the same methods that include qualitative graphic analysis and quantitative DepthMap space syntax analysis. Then make juxtaposition study of Jiangnan classical garden space and contemporary museum space. The study consists of three aspects(extract representative spatial pattern in Jiangnan classical gardens, inherit the overall design and learn from space gradation design in Jiangnan classical gardens),and gets the design strategy about contemporary museum space.
