With the rapid development of economy, the rail freight volume increases rapidly. While the transportation capacity of China heavy haul railway has been developed greatly, but it is still seriously inadequate. Improving axle-load and speed have become an important measure to increase transport capacity of heavy haul transport. With axle-load and speed increasing, the wheel-rail contact relationship gets worse and the wear between wheel and rail becomes more serious, which increases the cost of railway transportation and endangers operation safety directly. Therefore investigations into wheel wear mechanism and its root causes have an important guiding significance. The T?/A-wear rate curve of CL60 wheel was got by WR-1 wheel/rail rolling wear test machine using CL60 wheel and U71Mn rail materials. The vehicle system dynamic model was built using SIMPACK software and the calculating program of wheel wear model was written by MATLAB software based on Hertz contact and FASTSIM algorithm, wheel material (T?/A), curve of wear rate and Archard wear index. The wear depth and the data of tread update were smoothed using the smoothing method of five-spot triple and cubic spline, respectively. The effect on the wear of different wheels caused by two different wheel wear models and the evolvement rule of tread was explored based on T?/A-wear rate curve and Archard wear index. Furthermore, the effect of various conditions on wheel wear and the tread evolvement rule of Datong-Qinhuangdao railway were explored.Main conclusions are drawn as follows:(1) A T?/A-wear rate curve of wheel and rail material is divided into three regions, which are mild wear, severe wear and catastrophic wear. The injury mechanism of the three regions and material are consistent.(2) The wear of front wheel set is more serious than the rear one and the wear of the wheel running on the outer rail is more serious than the one on the inner rail under the same bogie.(3) The Archard wear model is based on the average value of each region of the Archard wear chart. However, the data of T?/A wear model is continuous, which is based on the variable wear rate of T?/A. Therefore, the T?/A wear model is more precise than the Archard wear coefficient model in terms of simulation and calculation.(4) The wear volume of wheels increases with the axle-load increase and decreases with the radius of the curve increase. In the straight line, it is not obvious with the speed increasing. In the curve section, the wear volume of wheels decreases first and increases with the speed increase except wheel-1 and wheel-5.(5) In the simulation of Qinhuangdao-Datong line, the depth of the abrasion of the front wheel set is larger than that of the rear wheel set under the same bogie. The change of two wheel tread of each wheel set was almost same.
