The electromagnetic railgun is becoming the new direction for the weapon technical research because of outstanding advantages and the research emphasis of electromagnetic railgun system is the power supply system. The previous studies have drawn a conclusion: the compensated pulsed alternator based on inertial energy storage is the best choice of the power supply system because of high power, high energy density and small size. This paper studies air-core pulsed alternators, a kind of compensated pulsed alternator.Firstly, this paper looks back the development of the electromagnetic railgun and compensated pulsed alternator, sketches the overseas and domestic research status, analyzes the working principle of the air-core pulsed alternators, derives the odd-phase alternator mathematic model's general term formula, introduces the electromagnetic railgun load and the software Saber.Secondly, this paper introduces the compositions of the alternator system with sevenphase alternator as an example. On this basis, establish the physical and mathematical model of each composition and derive the mathematical equations of each composition. Then compare the analytical results with the simulation results and derive the general term formula of each self-excitation's composition using the same method.Thirdly, on the basis of the analytic equation of each composition derived before, this paper discusses the peak current, the peak inverse voltage and some other switching device performance of the switching device in the system for the device selection.In the end, this paper compares the performances of alternators with different phase number. At last, we draw a conclusion: For the power supply of electromagnetic railgun, the 7-phase alternator is appropriate.
