With urbanization, the rapid spread of urban areas change the land use pattern in some rural areas, which are located near urban areas originally. The land use pattern converts from agricultural use mainly to a mixed land use pattern, which includes industrial use, commercial use, residential use, etc. At the same time, public infrastructures become more abundant. In this case, urban fringe zone appears.Different land use requires different access demand. Therefore, the accesses in urban fringe zone have various forms. The guidelines in China lack systematic rules for access yet. To some degree, it leads to the phenomenon of disordered access layout in urban fringe zone, along with the capacity reduction and safety deterioration of roads in urban fringe zone.Aiming at increasing the capacity and improving the safety of roads in urban fringe areas, the article researched optimizing layout methods for accesses in urban fringe zone. First, relative information was gathered, including domestic and foreign research papers, as well as data collected by field surveys. The article analyzed the vehicles' driving patterns and conflict patterns at access points. Based on all the relative information, accesses in urban fringe zone were divided into several categories. The rationality of the access classification is proved by mathematic statistics. Then, the article discussed the access layout principles on different grades of roads and researched the appropriate spacing between two accesses or between an access and an intersection. After that, the access window could be decided. Later on, the access geometric design method was researched from several aspects, including throat length, traffic organization at access point, throat width, return radii, etc. Moreover, the access layout method was discussed when facing a series of dense access. At last, some improvement measures were suggested based on a real example. The effectiveness of the improvement measures was evaluated by VIS SIM and SSAM.
