Pumped storage power station with its reversible flexible and reliable operation characteristics can achieve the effect of peak modulation and valley filling, frequency and voltage modulation, becoming the widely recognized and indispensable adjusting method that can maintain the stability of power grid. The reversible characteristic of pumped storage unit requires for a variety of operating mode, but compared to conventional hydro- generator unit, frequent condition transformation leads to more serious security risks. Therefor, Perfect protection measures of pumped storage units is very necessary. Pumped storage units protection including relay protection and non-electricity protection. There are relatively complete standard for relay protection, but none for non-electricity protection.This paper based on the project research, put forward the research idea by thinking how to optimize the non-electricity protection. First of all, gaining the knowledge of the unit non-electricity protection situation in several representative pumped-storage power station. Studying the failures of pumped-storage unit caused by non-electricity protection error through the analysis of various reasons. Thus, giving the direction of optimization work.The paper formulated the action processes of non-electricity protection, introduced the main equipment, operation characteristics, common problems and weak links of pumped-storage unit's every subsystem, summarized the non-electricity protection configuration, Sorted out the failures of pumped-storage unit caused by non-electricity protection error, deeply analysed the reasons of failures, put forward corresponding optimization thinking. To the temperature protection, vibration protection and over-speed protection, this paper put forward corresponding optimization suggestions from the aspects of Sensors' select and fix, Arrangement of measuring points, threshold setting and control logic.
