Intersection was an important node in road transportation network, as well as an accident-prone place, which brought the people and the traffic flow from multiple directions together. In order to improve the traffic safety performance and reduce the occurrence of traffic accidents, the traffic safety of Road intersection should be reasonably evaluated. Currently, the vast majority of the safety evaluation mainly aimed at the intersection of facilities and management means, and often overlooked the impact of these factors on driver's workload. Data showed that more than 90% of the traffic accidents caused by human factors, therefore, it was significant to evaluate the safety of the intersection from the perspective of drivers. The factors which influenced the safety of road intersection from four aspects of human, vehicle, road and environment were analyzed and laid the foundation of establishing the safety evaluation index system. Based on determining the measurement method of driver's workload, the virtual visual platform of the intersection was built, and the virtual visual driving experiment was designed.Through the virtual visual driving experiment, the driving parameters and the psychological parameters of drivers were collected. Based on these data, the driving behavior and the characteristics of driver's workload of the intersection were analyzed, and the influence of the driver's workload on the traffic safety was obtained. The safety evaluation system was established based on 5 indexes, including driver's workload, traffic conflict, signal lamp, intersection geometry design and intersection facilities, and respectively analyzes the concrete influence factors of the five indexes. The weight of each index was given by using the method of Analytic hierarchy process and Expert scoring method. And the safety evaluation model of Road intersection based on driver's workload was established based on the grey relational degree analysis method. The model was applied to the typical intersection in Beijing, the evaluation results were in conformity with the actual traffic conditions,to verify the validity of the model, and provide theory basis for operation safety management decision for the governance.
