Traditional maintenance mode of electric power system in China as the periodic maintenance, follow the principle of compulsory due tocycle. However, with the expanding scale of power system, wide range increased, relay protection equipments increased in number, and mode of periodic maintenance workload is too heavy; Scheduled maintenance of shutdown time is too long and reduce the availability of the equipment, it doesn’t conform to the requirements of the high quality of power supply. In order to improve condition based maintenance in practical application in the field of relay protection, this paper is mainly about:(1) This state assessment to collect what effective information, provide the basis for the state overhaul. To make a study of relay protection health detection method, put forward a new detection method, and verify its ratio nality and validity.(2) Further refinement of state evaluation process to make it more operational. The introduction of "fault tree method to assess the reliability of equipment, and the fault tree method is verified by an example on the relay protection maintenance application effect.(3) Put forward the concept of overall condition assessment. Combining with a equipment, automation systems, non-electricity protection, monitor relay protection health from all directions.(4) Collecting equipment maintenance, operation, record state evaluation database is established. The creation of a comprehensive condition based maintenance system, and relay protection maintenance into standard maintenance process.
