Globalization has a profound impact on modern urban construction, it makes a result that urban physical space form has a great deal of convergence all over the world. The history and culture is the unique resources of the local city, which has become the source of the city's personality. Geographical names as intangible elements of historic city, is an entry point to study the non-material construction of urban form. It is a new attempt in the study of urban form to explore the relationship between place names and urban morphology, and to explore the process of "material" and "immaterial" form construction of the complex landscape of the city.Since ancient times, Chengdu and Chongqing are the two typical cities in the southwest, but the natural geographical conditions, urban historical and cultural processes and urban form has significant differences. Taking Chengdu and Chongqing as research objects, based on spatial and temporal evolution, the thesis,on the transverse, analyzes the connection between morphology and geographical names of the two cities in different historical periods, explores people's awareness of the city; on the longitudinal, probes the associations between the evolution of morphology and the change of place names; and by comparing the forms and geographic names of the two historical cities, the dessertation summarizes the general law that how the urban place be named, the morphological characteristics of cities and evolution that place names reflect(including natural features, cultural characteristics and artificial features), to reveal the similarities and differences. In terms of division of time, taking into account the differences in cultural influences and historical events of urban construction between the two cities, the paper divided the development of geogrefic names and urban form into two periods: traditional and modernity. At the same time, according to the historical development process, the contents and characteristics of the relationship between the place name and the city shape were investigated by intercepting a representative time node map of the two cities. In the correlation factors and scales, the paper selects the landscape from the macro-scale, the street from meso-scale, the landmarker from micro-scale as connecting factors. Based on graphic data, through space translation and vertical and horizontal comparison, the aritical summarize the common and difference between the two cities, then explore the reason. On this basis, horizontally, the paper find that the distribution of place names and urban natural landscape have much consistency; street form and street names have a certain matching relations in hierarchy and complexity, the inheritance of the morphology and historical street names is very well in the urban process; building name reflects the building's location, size, function, culture morphology; historical heritage buildings, groups of buildings and their names become urban characteristic cultural space, its name and shape has become the naming and etymology source of the surrounding buildings, historical name with subject has a more intense diffusion. Vertically, the paper summarizes the evolution and the heritage of name and its form from landscape, street, building in Chengdu and Chongqing, found that natural geography has a huge impact on place names and forms in Chongqing, Chengdu has more cultural influences; the streets heritage is the most stable, and the historical names have diffusion in two cities, but this phenomenon is more prominent in Chengdu. Similarities and differences between the performance of the two place names and forms are due to the historical and cultural differences of the geographical environment, culture and urban construction events in Chengdu and Chongqing. Finally, the paper takes Chengdu Names Overall Planning as a case, studies historical names and space protection, inheritance and innovation, gives the utilization recommendations in the historical city of Chengdu.
