The consequence which was brought by the increasingly serious environmental pollution and energy shortage problems forced engine to improved its performance. Engine intake process has a profound impact on the power, fuel economy and emissions performance of the engine. Based on the steady flow test, with the help of FIRE software the numerical simulation was used to study the in-cylinder flow of the 167 FMI engine, which makes the comparison of the air flow performance and in-cylinder air movement of three kinds of intake ports.Through the steady flow test and the processed the test results, discharge coefficients are gained and compared to the other engines’, which finds the engine intake ports’ flow capacity is in the upper level. Making comparison between the steady test results and simulation results gains that they are in good agreement.By dynamic mesh division, the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy fields were computed via transient simulation for the intake ports during discharge and compression processes. A large scale of tumble motions are found in cylinder of No.2 and No.3 intake ports and the motion can continue until the TDC by way of comparison of the cuts at different angle. Relatively, No.1 port’s tumble motion is broken before TDC, which leads to its the turbulent kinetic energy near TDC is less than the other ports and this is not conducive to the rapid and stable combustion of mixed gas. At last, suggestions are made to improve about the reverse flow zone and intake restriction. In this paper, steady state and transient simulation were used in the research of flow field in different ports and cylinder of one engine, which revealed the different movement characteristics of flow field in cylinder, it also provides a theoretical guidance for the design and optimize of engine intake ports structure.
