Materials management is critical to the success of construction projects. With the increasing complexity of construction projects, there is a critical need to optimize the traditional project management methods, especially in the domain of construction materials management, to gain efficiencies in construction and consequently, to make profound impact to the economy of the society. The thesis presents new management practices for the key logistics problems of construction projects, bringing theories on system science, management, and optimization together. Integrated with the up-to-date theories and methods of project management and logistics management, this study conducts systematic analysis on construction logistics management of large-scale projects in four main areas, namely (1) management system prototype; (2) plan and control; (3) information flow management; (4) material flow management.First, the concept of construction logistics is brought forward and its characteristics are identified in comparison with traditional logistics. Based on literature review and field study, a system prototype for construction projects logistics management is constructed. Then, the challenge of traditional project plan and control is addressed by introducing the most advanced management tool of lean construction, which is Last Planner System. The construction material requirement plan system is built on the brand new project plan and control system. This study also analyzes the information flow during the construction logistics management process. A new information communication model is developed utilizing Project Information Portal. Real-time communication of logistics information is realized by the integrated wireless and visual system, thus optimizing the logistics information flow in construction. In addition, a RFID-facilitated construction material flow management system is introduced.Last, the thesis selects nuclear power projects as case study projects.
