The Greater Mekong subregion is very mysterious with rich historical heritage resources. There emerged a lot of dynasty regime and experienced the brilliant development from the Christian era to the early 16th centry, their capitals built with a wealth of wisdom, representing the characteristics of national culture. Experiencing with the time, many ancient capitals are not well protected. Considering that many countries are lack of economic and technical conditions, and the historical heritage protection was awfully neglected in the past. The international community has been working to protect the historical heritage, the protection of historical heritage has received more and more attention, the idea, strategy and method of the heritage protection are constantly upgrading and updating. With the construction of the trans Asian Railway and the state "The Belt and Road" vision, domestic and international research on GMS get more and more noticed. This paper attempts to explore the cultural roots of the ancient dynasties and the characteristics of the ancient capital, and summarizes the characteristics of the ancient capital about its urban spatial form.It is important to focus on the classification of segmented when doing research about ancient capitals from the perspective of large regionalstudies need to start from natural, ethnic, cultural and historical background and extend to urban spatial form,so we can find the context of the vicissitude of the same period and the interactions with different capital in different periods. Since the area is so large, the research start from the five main basin of the Greater Mekong subregional,then combing different urban spatial morphology of ancient cities,finding the similarities and differences between these cities.The last step is analysing the urban location, layout, the position of mainly function as well as the palace and the characteristics of religious buildings and finding its internal causes.
