At present, the road construction is generally consist of the cement stabilized and lime fly ash. The traditional material consumes a lot of energy and resources, and the performance is yet to be improved. China is a country famous in producing steel. Steel slag is by-product generated in the process, and it will bring new pollution whether it is stacked or burned. If it can be used in the construction of road engineering, it can not only solve the problem of over excavation of stones, but also protect the environment. Therefore, the application of steel slag in road engineering has broad prospects.Firstly, the mineral composition, physical properties and chemical properties of steel slag are studied in this paper. According to highway asphalt pavement construction technology specification, steel slag used as aggregate for road engineering is feasible.Next, based on previous research, the author determines the test method, and prepare the specimen. Author carries out the relevant experimental study about steel slag asphalt concrete of fine grain size distribution AC-13, medium grain size distribution AC-16 and AC-20. The permeability of steel slag asphalt concrete is tested, and the seepage coefficient is calculated,and the relationship between the permeability coefficient and the maximum nominal particle size is obtained. Through single axial compression test of steel slag asphalt concrete, the compressive strength and compressive modulus were measured. At the same time, the stress-strain relationship curve is obtained, and author analyses the relationship between asphalt aggregate ratio and compressive strength, compressive modulus. The fatigue life of steel slag asphalt concrete is determined by fatigue life test. The author makes a regression analysis between stiffness modulus and the number of load, and the fatigue equation is obtained.Finally, the author analyzes the characteristics of three kinds of gradation, and compares with the gravel asphalt concrete. Steel slag asphalt concrete meet the requirements of the relevant specifications, and can be applied in pavement engineering.
