Composite insulators have been playing a great role in the anti pollution flashover due to its excellent hydrophobicity recovery and migration properties. At present, there is a lack of detailed test data for the operating conditions of composite insulators under the scene typical conditions, especially for the lack of in-depth analysis of the pollution flashover performance, and the research on the operation of RTV insulators is also less. These problems bring a great difficulty for the department of the production and operation to determine whether to continue running according to the operation of the insulator, which also pose a potential threat to the power grid security. Therefore, it is very important to make targeted researches on the flashover performance of composite insulators under different operating environments and conditions.In this paper, the fouling characteristics of the composite insulators were comprehensively analyzed, and the objects were the composite insulators and RTV insulators returned in the south of Hebei. The natural and pollution flashover performances of composite insulators under different operating periods and different voltage levels were examined systematically according to the relevant standards. Then it explored the relationship between the voltage of natural pollution flashover, the artificial pollution flashover and various factors in the composite insulators. Further, the factors affecting the flashover voltage of composite insulators were discussed and the most severe operating environment parameters were obtained by simulating the pollution flashover of composite insulators under different conditions, especially the extremely severe environments.Meanwhile, the appearance inspection, hydrophobicity test and interface property test of the running RTV insulator were carried out. Through these experiments, we could master the operation status of the RTV insulator, and propose the guidance for the operation and production.The results of this paper are contributed to master the external insulation state of composite insulators and RTV insulators in the south of Hebei, so as to provide some guidance to the operation and maintenance decision of composite insulators and RTV insulators.
