In recent years, due to the huge advantages of pipe truss structure, such as its beautiful building shape and simple and reasonable power transmission, more and more pipe truss structures are being applicated in large canopys of the stadium roof. Global stability of large truss cantilever stadium roof is a very important factor to the carrying capacity of cantilever stadium roof, but the existing norms provisions toward its overall stability analysis is not complete. Therefore, considering the uniqueness and importance of the large pipe truss cantilever stadium roof, it is necessary to do in-depth analysis for the overall stability of this structure.First of all, this paper has introduced the development of stadium structure and synthesized various basic types of cantilever stadium roof and expounded the principles and methods of overall stability analysis to the pipe truss cantilever stadium roof. Then, regarding the CHANGNAN stadium cantilever roof as the illustrations of verification, this paper has built a total of six analysis models that the single frame?3 frames and overall model of planar cantilever and stereo cantilever scheme. With the finite element software MIDAS/GEN, this paper has made the static strength analysis ? linear buckling analysis and the geometric nonlinear overall stability analysis(the perfect structure, the defective structure and the key component failure). And based on the comprehensive contrast analysis results, this paper has investigated the contribution that the overall performance and the cantilever space performance act on the static performance and the overall stability of cantilever stadium roof. In the end, this paper has summarized the above analysis results and reached some general rules of the overall stability about large truss cantilever stadium roof which can be a reference for similar research analysis and engineering practice.This study shows that: Just in the stereo cantilever scheme, the contribution that the overall performance acts on the static performance and the overall stability of cantilever stadium roof can be played out truethfully, but in the planar cantilever scheme, this contribution has little effect. Compared with the planar cantilever scheme, the static performance and the overall stability during the stereo cantilever scheme is stronger. One frame stereo cantilevered truss approximately can carry things independently, so it can be the first defense line of stadium itself. To similar cantilever stadium roof, the model of planar cantilever scheme is sensitive with the initial defect, but the model of stereo cantilever scheme is has little effect. The cantilever stadium roof turns to be overall instable mainly because the bottom chord of cantilever truss is instable in-plane direction or vertical displacement of cantilevered end is too large. For similar cantilever stadium roofs that possess diagonal brace and several hoop truss, the effect that diagonal brace and the hoop truss which closes to the roots contribute to the overall stability is intensive.
