Compared with the fixed wing and rotary wing micro air vehicle (MAV), flapping wing MAV, which has many advantages, may have prospects for broad application in military, disaster relief and other fields, and is becoming a new research area. The design of flapping wing MAV is bio-inspired by the driving and flight principle of insects. The key is how to design the bionic flapping wing MAV which can fly like flapping wing insects in nature. Based on the current research foundation, the thesis experimentally investigates the transmission system of the bionic flapping wing MAV. The main research includes:The selection principle for materials of flapping wing MAV actuator, frame, transmission system, and wings is determined. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), polyimide film tape, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and micro motor are chosen to build the MAV. By biomimetic analysis of dipteran insects, a flapping wing MAV structure, which can realize bi-stable (click) nonlinear characteristic, is designed. The MAV wings flap periodically, and are connected to a flexible structure which is driven by a micro motor through a crank and connecting rod mechanism. By analyzing the structure of the MAV, the optimal MAV structure and size are determined. The video for the motion of the MAV flapping wings is captured and the flapping regularity is analyzed using the computer program Tracker. Using Instron MicroTester 5848, a quasi-static load is applied on the flexible transmission system of the flapping wing MAV and the restoring force of the bionic flexible transmission is measured. By the designed wind tunnel experiments, the flow field of the flapping wing is measured.By experimentally study on the optimal designed bio-inspired flapping wing MAV, it is found that the designed MAV with the flexible transmission can realize the click mechanism. The wings have higher flapping speed during the down-stroke, which may improve the performance of the flapping wing MAV.
