Active chilled beams air-conditioning system(ACBAS) is an inducible radiant cooling/heating system combining energy efficiency with thermal comfort. Compared with traditional air-conditioning systems, ACBAS has a higher cooling or heating capacity. Active chilled beams(ACBs) generate low noise for they have no motor inside, so ACBs are also energy-saving terminals. ACBs are suitable for almost all kinds of ceilings for ACBs devices have different lengths and widths. In Europe and the United States, the application of ACBs is relatively common. While in China, there are not many applications of ACBs. On one hand, the research of ACBs is still not mature enough. On the other hand, ACBs products are mostly imported brands so with higher prices. These factors have affected the promotion and application of ACBAS in China.This article summarizes the research of domestic and foreign scholars on the ACBs technology. The working principle of ACBs is analyzed on the basis of unlimited space gas jet theory and cooler heat exchanger theory on dry condition. Inducement ventilation model and cooler heat exchanger model are set up for the establishment of ACBs model, and the thermal performance evaluation system of ACBs is proposed after that. The established models are verified by experimental values. On the research above, the structure parameters which affect the thermal performance of ACBs are summarized. CFD method is used to research the influence of structure parameters on the thermal performance of ACBs. The relevant design technical guidelines of ACBs are got through this method. Finally, structure design of ACBs is done through a design practice.The results of this article are summarized as follows:1. Inducement ventilation model and cooler heat exchanger model on dry condition are set up on the basis of unlimited space jet theory and cooler heat exchanger theory. Ultimately the ACBs model is established and the performance evaluation system of ACBs is proposed.2. Experiments have been done to test the thermal performance of ACBs and to verify the accuracy of the established models. Performance comparisons and evaluations are done to the different ACBs according to the performance evaluation system.3. With the objective of maximizing the cooling capacity of ACBs, simulations are done to study the influence of structure parameters on the thermal performance of ACBs. The relevant design criterions of ACBs are put forward.4. An active chilled beam sample is designed and manufactured. Thermal performance of the sample is tested and analyzed.
