With the continuous increasing of low-speed rear collision traffic accidents, great attention has been paid to the safety of car rear collision. As the main absorbing energy component, the energy absorption capacity of rear bumper can directly affect the integrity of the other rear components and the safety of whole automobile. So, in order to improve the crashworthiness of automobile, the new energy absorbing material of aluminum foam is filled into the rear bumper.After analyzing the types and functions of existing rear bumper, and taking a type car rear bumper as the research object, the car rear bumper filled with aluminum foam is designed based on the properties of aluminum foam structure. Then, two kinds of rear bumper structures are established by using CATIA software, which is the prototype structure and filled with aluminum foam structure. The energy absorption characteristic of car rear bumper filled with aluminum foam is improved through theoretical analysis method. The finite element models of two kinds of rear bumpers are created by using Hyperworks software. According to the pendulum impact test as the evaluation criteria in the Chinese regulations, the low speed collision properties of the car rear bumper filled with aluminum foam is researched, and made a comparative analysis between two kinds of rear bumpers. The results show that the automobile rear bumper filled with aluminum foam can improve the energy absorption characteristic, and reduced the whole weight. So, it provides a new way to research the safety of vehicles and the development of environment protection for future.
