The very ubiquity of information technology makes it one of the most important factors in urban competitiveness. The traffic jam, killer of the efficiency, brings great economic loss and the environment deterioration. Study on signal control methods, especially on the bottleneck problem caused by intersections, to improve the efficiency of the overall transport network with new concepts and tools, has significant importance. In this case, the thesis focuses on optimal control of single intersection based on lane method.Firstly, the traffic flows are characterized by a set, and the basic relations in the set of traffic streams, conflict, nonconflict or compatibility relation is presented through compatibility graph. Definitions of signal group and complete signal group followed, and the method of branch-and-bound is developed to find them. Traffic control at an intersection consists of many vectors, and the optimal control problem is transformed to the problem of optimal closed path on the graph of control vectors transition. Then, aims to maximize the capacity and minimize the delay at an intersection subject to the sets of constraints on minimal effective green times, maximal effective red times, and the traffic flow balance, etc., the tool of MATLAB is used to solve this problem in determining the optimal structure and cycle time split to control vectors. In the end, the lane method is applied to Huancheng Bei Lu-Yihai North Road intersection, Dongyang city. Experimental results show that the capacity of intersection can be significantly improved, and the delay reduced. After verifying the effectiveness of the lane method, we also need to do further research on arterial control and take the multi-traffic into consideration.
