A huge number of suspension porcelain insulators are widely used in the power grid, during the charged runing, it may lead to zero or low value faulty situation. If Insulator has faulty situation, it may cause serious accident such as insulator iron cap burst out and wire fall to the ground. So the insulator condition monitoring is one of the important works of the electricity sector. But the current faulty insulators detection method is not only a heavy workload but also has high-risk, So in order to improve the efficiency and safety of detection work, This paper developed a portable live working detection system for faulty insulator based on the infrared detection method. The concrete works are as follows:1. The author and the research team conducted a series of experiments of insulator strings at the artificial pollution laboratory of State Grid Electric Power Research Institute of Jiangxi. The experiments include fever laws and temperature characteristics of the normal of insulator strings, the impact of the different position, degradation resistance value, environmental factors, etc.The experiments results verify the feasibility of infrared detection of faulty insulator, and the results data can be used to guide the infrared detection work.2. Some matters needing attention in the process of the insulator infrared image collection are put forward, and the author provides some sample pictures. Select the appropriate image processing method for insulator infrared image, such as filtering de-noising, binarization processing, angle correction, regional segmentation processing, etc.3. In this paper, a reference temperature characteristics method to detect and orientate faulty insulator in infrared image is proposed, the method have good detection effect in practical application, it greatly improved the accuracy and has a broad prospect of engineering appli cation.4. A set of portable live working detection system for faulty insulator based on the infrared detection method is designed, this system integrated with some function such as compling insulator testing plan, insulator infrared image acquisition, ima ge processing, intelligent judgment insulator faulty conditions and provide test results, etc.This paper provides a non-contact remote detection solution to detect deterioration insulators with a higher accuracy rate, widely used will achieve better economic and social benefits.
