Air model simulation is a popular and effective way to study the behavior of air pollutant, which has been widely applied in related research. However, the atmospheric models typically output complicated data files, challenging users to understand the simulated results, which strengthen the need of a powerful visualization tool to assist digging out the useful, valuable information. In order to meet the challenges of model simulation brought to visualization, combined with the characteristics and trends,we developed a new-generation Model Visualization and Analysis Tool,or Model-VAT.This paper first analyzed the traditional air model visualization tools, summed up the advantages and disadvantages and pointed out what problem to be solved and what function to be finished by Model-VAT.Then,the functional design and framework of Model-VAT are proposed. The dissertation focuses on the integrated application of multi-dimensional visualization technology, embedded GIS component technology and R language function in Model-VAT;and the implementation method for remote data transmission between heterogeneous platforms, comparative data analysis between heterogeneous models, model evaluation, online maps and other new functions. Finally,to examine the reliability and practicality of Model-VAT,a simple simulation research of analyzing the boundary conditions influence on atmospheric mercury simulation using CMAQ model in the Pearl River Delta region is designed. The experimental results,as an application case of Model-VAT,confirm that boundary conditions have great influence on the performance of CMAQ-Hg model.Using default profile as boundary input was not recommended when its concentration values were greatly different from the background value of modeling domain.Using model-drived boundary conditions files such as GEOS-Chem and nesting CMAQ may be alternative choices. The innovative new functions of Model-VAT will be an especially convenient tool for analyzing and comparing different types of model system.
