Mn(OAc)3 is an important radical initiator used in the generation of carbon-and other heteroatom-centered radicals such as phosphorus radical, sulfur radical, nitrogen radical and so on.These radicals can react with unsaturated systems intramolecularly or intermolecularly to give highly functionalized compounds. This study focused mainly on the reactions of radicals generated by Mn(OAc)3 and has been further divided into three main parts. The first part involves the generation of phosphorus-centered radicals by Mn(OAc)3,and their reactions with indoles to selectively afford phosphoindoles in good yields. The second part is based on the reaction of phosphonyl radicals with aldehyde hydrazones for the direct synthesis of functionalizedα-iminophosphine oxides. These reactions are operationally simple and proceeds smoothly under mild conditions in high yields. In the last part, both 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds and sodium chloride were oxidized by manganese(III)to generate carbon and halogen radicals respectively. As a result,a series of 2,2-dichloro-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds were obtained. The structures of all synthesized compounds were characterized by their spectroscopic data.On the basis of results obtained, plausible mechanisms were also proposed for these reactions.
