In this article, different modified asphalts were prepared by adding different amounts of styrene-butadiene-styrene ternary block copolymer (SBS) to base asphalt and Preparation of SBS modified asphalt mesophase samples at different temperature and different holding time.Analysis the influence of temperature and holding time on the structure and formation of the samples after comparing the anisotropic structure by polarizing microscope, to determine the optimum process parameters of preparation SBS modified mesophase pitch. Under the optimum process parameters, mesophase pitch of SBS modified asphalt was prepared by adding different dose of SBS (5%, 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%). the effects on formation of mesophase pitch were analyzed by polarized light microscopy, SEM, FTIR, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The micro pictures of the SBS mesophase pitch samples prepared under the optimum process conditions show that the optical structure is uniform and the anisotropy is wide area. In addition, the crystal particles of mesophase pitch belong to micron grade, the shape is irregular and the distribution is uneven. SBS is a kind of practical and effective modifier for carbonization of asphalt. The addition of SBS can increase the crystal size of the mesophase pitch, at the same time, the SBS modifier can promote the formation of the methylene group and the aromatic molecule group, increase the content of mesophase pitch, thus the properties of mesophase pitch can be improved. The content of the alkyl group in the mesophase pitch incresases by adding appropriate amount of SBS modifier can improve the orientation arrangement of the planar aromatic molecules in the mesophase pitch and influence the anisotropic structure of mesophase pitch.
