Low-density polyethylene(LDPE) film is widely used in many industries such as packaging, home appliance, medical device and mobile electronic equipment etc., due to its excellent mechanical properties, good isolation performance, transparency and low cost.During packaging, transportation and service, LDPE film is frequently scratched by sharp objects. The investigation of the scratch performance of LDPE film has drawn significant attention. In order to investigate the scratch performance of LDPE film, following works were carried out in this paper:(1) A lightweight polymer film material scratch test machine was well designed and developed referring to the existed scratch equipment. A specimen clamp, with a replaceable substrate and capable to maintain the pre-stretch state of film, was used to carry out different kinds of scratch tests;(2) The influence of the substrate material, scratch direction and speed on the scratch performance of the LDPE film was studied. The process of scratch was recorded using a high-speed camera and the scratch morphology was observed. Then the typical film scratch damage modes and their evolution were analyzed and summarized;(3) The influence of the extent and direction of pre-stretch on the scratch performance of the LDPE film was discussed. The effect of physical aging and on the scratch performance of LDPE film was also investigated. The correlation between scratch performance and the elongation at break was established. |
