The change of vegetation cover will directly lead to the change of the ecological environment. Desert riparian forest, the typical vegetation type of arid zone, reveals the total states of environmental change in continental river basin in arid zone. Based on the landscape pattern changes of desert riparian forest in the mainstream of the Tarim River area, research has been studied through the analysis of drought conditions, characteristics of vegetation carbon storage, ecological service values, and so on in the certain area. Also the evaluation indicator system has been established and comprehensive evaluation on the environmental effects of desert riparian forest has been carried out in this study. The results showed that: (1) During the past 2 decades, the grassland landscape area was gradually reducing in the mainstream of the Tarim River aresa, while the farmland, residential land were expanding, with the growth of population,the development of social economy and artificial landscape, the increasing degree of landscape fragmentation. (2) The study area is in a severe drought condition. The evapotranspiration increased at a tendency of 19.99mm/10a while precipitation increased at a tendency of 2.13mm/10a. Annual evapotranspiration is so much more than annual precipitation that the dryness index tended to increase; Temperature, precipitation and evapotranspiration show a huge inconsistency spatially. (3) There are also obvious regional differences in the spatial and temporal distribution of vegetation carbon density in the desert riparian forest. Combined with drought conditions, ecological service values, as well as social economy as indexes, the overall evaluation the environmental quality of the study area is rising. Thus,based on the technique of remote sensing,combining with the TuPu expression in the spatial and temporal distributions,the environmental effects caused by changes in the landscape of desert riparian forest in the Tarim River Basin is studied and a perfect indicator system for monitoring and evaluating is established.This not only plays an important role in the growth of desert riparian forests in inland rivers, but also has important theoretical and practical significance to the sustainable development on the Tarim River Basin.
