Coals as the major natural resources and fossil fuelsare is widely used in thermal power in China. A lot of research shows that more or less natural radionuclides exist in coals. The soil was been vary degrees of radioactive pollution because of the radionuclides in the coals with the fly ash and slag may be rich in the soil environment when the coals were burning.Based on the two major coal-fired power plant in Harbin (Qunli power plant and Hulan power plant), high purity germanium gamma spectrometer was used to detective the specific activities of the natural radionuclides , such as 238U, 232Th,226Ra and 40K in the coal fly ash and the soil surrounding the power plant. The results show that more or less radioactive nuclide in fly ash and slag and the radioactive level more than the entire province average level in the soil around the power plant. However there will be a long term radioactive effect because of the long-term operation of the power plant. The largest contribution to the dose of public is the soil through the analysis the contribution to the dose of public around coal-fired power plants in the surrounding soil, fly ash and fly ash building materials, but it is not beyond the dose of country limit.
