Reducers are indispensable parts in the processes of mechanical transmission, who play a decisive role in the mechanical transmission. The design scheme of the reducer and its optimizing scheme affect transmission efficiency. But the main design method of the reducer is the traditional optimization design. It is relatively independent with manufacture, maintenance and other follow-up stage. This paper adopts the lifecycle of management theory as the guide, and the hot test mill reducer as design object, the reducer is designed by the comprehensive design which covers the structure design of reducer, lubrication design and maintenance plan, etc.First of all, based on the investigation and analysis on the reducer of the hot test rolling mill and it can confirm load of reducer type.Through the traditional design, this paper completes the whole basic design work for reducer. It provides the basis not only for 3D modeling but also for finite element structure analysis and optimization.Second, the shafts of the reducer are as the main research objects. The 3D simulation is carried out about them, the mechanics analysis models are established, and the finite element static analysis is analyzed. It provides the basis and preliminary data for the optimization of the transmission shafts.Thirdly, with lightweight design as the goal, the transmission shafts are designed for structure optimization.According to the results of finite element analysis and optimization process, the unreasonable shafts are optimized for structural parameters,it makes the design more perfect. Finally,by using the lifecycle management and the experiences about the operation and maintenance of reducers, the lubrication system of the reducer is designed and the maintenance plans and maintenance methods of the reducer are expounded.
