Weaving is an important part of the textile industry chain, while warp sizing is the most important process before weaving.Synthetic polymer polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)is widely used in warp sizing because it contains a large amount of hydroxyl groups, excellent adhesion and good film-forming and flexibility, but sizing which contains PVA will make the waste water from cloth after the paste contains lots of polyvinyl alcohol, which pollutes the environment badly. Therefore, the research and development of eco-friendly starch graft copolymer size are becoming very important.Currently, most starch-based textile size are too weak in abrasive resistance, insufficient adhesion, and easy to be broken, which make it still being greatly limited among the thin cotton yarn,polyester-cotton blended yarn and pure polyester yarn and other areas of application. In this paper, the author focus on the weakness of starch-based size which meantioned above, using high energy irradiation change the structure and molecular weight of starch.Meanwhile, the effects of irradiation dose on the structure and molecular weight of starch were also studied. The effects of initiator dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time on the grafted acrylic acid and vinyl acetate monomer were also studied by using cerium salt initiator as initiator. The author use TG,DSC,mechanical properties to study its thermal properties, tensile strength and elongation at break. At last, the author studied the biodegradability of starch-based size. The results shows that the irradiation dose had little effect on the crystal structure of corn starch, while the maximum thermal viscosity of starch decreased with the increase of irradiation dose. When the irradiation dose was above 40 kGy,the maximum thermal viscosity of starch was not obvious.Under the irradiation of starch and cerium salt, the grafting rate and grafting efficiency of acrylic acid and vinyl acetate monomer were significantly increased to 89.57% and 82.45%.The introduction of polar and flexible monomers can significantly enhance the adhesion of starch graft copolymers to cotton roving and polyester-cotton roving and the abrasion resistance of yarn, the tensile strength and elongation of the membrane. The rate is much higher than the original starch serosa.TG and DSC results shows that irradiation can effectively increase the thermal stability of starch. The biodegradability results is about 0.3,which means the biodegradability is good and it is eco-friendly.
