Rubber rollers are important industrial accessories in many production and processing industries. The current research on rollers are mainly concentrated in the textile and papermaking industries. The problem caused by roller wear in steel metallurgy industry leads to quality defects have not been solved effectively, that has negative influence on the enterprise' benefit and reputation. The roller wear results in some quality problems in the steel metallurgy industry, which makes negative influence on benefit and reputation of the enterprise.Based on the engineering analysis example that roller wear may influence the quality of strip surface, this paper analyzed the mechanism of friction and wear of elastic body, investigated the operation condition of the cold strip mill and carried out the failure analysis of the worn rollers. The black material on the roller surface was the wear debris of rubber layer,it can adhesion on the strip surface with the accumulation, and influence the quality of strip surface. The results demonstrate that the black material on the roller surface, which was the wear debris of rubber layers palling from steel surface, would adhere to the strip surface and make influence on the quality of strip surface. To further study the rolling friction and wear behavior between polyurethane roller and strip steel, this paper carried out a series of rolling tests between polyurethane roller and steel disc using the double disc friction and wear testing machine and analyzed the effects of load, revolution, hardness, roughness and temperature on the friction and wear of polyurethane. The results show that:the friction coefficient decreases with the increase of load while the wear rate increases;the effect of rotational speed and roughness on the rolling friction coefficient is not obvious while the wear rate decreases first and then increases with the increase of roughness;the friction coefficient increases with the increase of hardness while its effect on wear rate is based on the form of wear;the change of temperature mainly affects the properties of polyurethane, and increasing temperature would decrease the firiction coefficient and increase the wear rate. The finite element analyses using ABAQUS were also conducted with establishing a finite element model of rolling contact between polyurethane roller and steel disc. The STEADY STATE TRANSPORT option was used to achieve the steady interaction between roller and steel disc and transform the complex motion contact problem into a spatial correlation model. And using the subroutine UMESHMOTION the contact wear analysis was completed. The results indicate that this finite element model is effective to simulate the wear behavior of rolling contact between polyurethane roller and steel disc and can achieve the influence of hardness and load on the wear of materials by changing the relevant parameters.
