Anaerobic methanogenic process is one of the effective ways for the resourcization of the organic wastes and has been widely applied in the treatment of industrial wastewater, municipal solid waste, agricultural waste, livestock wastes, etc. However, the shortcomings of this anaerobic process were also reported as the low methane production efficiency and generation rate.In the current study goethite, which was abundant in the natural environment, was used to enhance the methanogenic process of the wastewater.Sodium acetate and glucose were used as carbon source to simulate the organic wastewater.Effect of goethite on the methanogenic process was studied firstly.Effects of organic loadings on the methane production and generation rate was studied in a continuous stirring tank reactor and the evolution of microbial community was also monitored.1)In the batch reactors addition of goethite or Fe3+/Fe2+ promoted the methanogenic process and goethite showed a higher efficiency. No significant change was observed for goethite. However,in the system added with Fe3+/Fe2+ blue iron ore?FePO4?or siderite?FeCO3?was formed.2)In the continuous stirring tank reactor promotion effect of goethite was significant when the hydraulic loading was in the range of 0.91-1.80 g/L/d.Maximum methane production and generate rate was achieved when the loading was 1.80 g/L/d.Methane production in goethite dosed reactor and control reactor were 247 and 209 m L/L/d,respectively.3)Microbial community analysis results indicated that goethite promoted the growth of Clostridium and Methanothrix which was benefitable for the fermentative and methanogenic process.4)With the change of hydraulic loading,Methanothrix was always dominant in the reactors. However, the bacterial community structure changed significantly and most strains were acid producing bacteria.Bacterial diversity index for the reactor added with goethite was higher than the control which might be benefitable for the methanogenic process.
