Poly(ethylene terephthalate) PET is a kind of chemical fiber and has been widely used in textile, food packaging, car interior decoration and many other fields due to the excellent chemical and dimensional stability. However, with the development of society and technology, the environmental problems have been increased seriously, and ozone layer in the air has been severely damaged, resulting in UV light can reach the ground directly. As we know, UV light and some part of visible light can destruct the chemical bonds of organic molecules and become the major factors causing photo-aging of polymer materials. In this study, some kinds of PET fabrics with aging resistance were prepared with polymeric UV absorber through traditional pad-dry-cure process and electron beam irradiation process, respectively. The main work of this paper includes the following sections:In the first part, HAB and BHMEC were grafted onto the PET by pad-dry-cure process, and grafting processes were discussed. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) were used to characterize the grafted PET fabrics. And the results showed that the HAB and BHMEC had been successfully grafted onto the surface of polyester fabric. The retention rate of breaking strength of PET fabrics grafted with HAB and BHMEC after 300 h under UV irradiation was(65.3±0.8)% and(60.5±3.6)%, respectively, and was increased by 21.8% and 27.4% compared with untreated samples. The UPF values of the grafted fabrics were 197±13 and 218±11. Besides, the light fastness of dyed PET fabrics grafted with HAB and BHMEC had big improvement, and the fastness grade was increased from the original three to five for dyed PET after 40 h under light, which showed that the grafted fabrics had excellent UV protection performance. In the second part, HAB and BHMEC were grafted onto the PET by electron beam(EB) irradiation process. Scanning electron microscope(SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) were used to characterize the grafted PET. And the results showed that the HAB and BHMEC had been successfully grafted onto the surface of polyester fabric. The properties test showed that the retention rate of breaking strength of PET fabrics grafted with HAB and BHMEC after 300 h under UV irradiation was(68.3±2.5)% and(71.1±0.3)%, respectively, and increased by 27.1% and 32.4% compared with untreated samples. The UPF values of the grafted fabrics were 235±15 and 274±15. The strength loss of PET fabrics grafted with HAB and BHMEC was 19% and 27.1% in the warp direction, 27% and 26.6% in the weft direction, which is within the allowable range. Compared with traditional PDC grafting method, the retention rate of strength for PET fabrics grafted with HAB and BHMEC was increased by 7.8% and 5.8%, and UPF value was increased by 28 and 56. Besides, the fabric grafted fabrics with EB method had good sunlight fastness and fastness grade was increased from the original three to five after 40 h light irradiation, which showed that the grafted fabrics had excellent UV protection performance.
