Since the reform and opening up in China, the rapid growth in economy and population leads to exploding resource consumption. In such case, the natural environment is severely polluted with the increased amount of pollutants we have discharged. And the environmental pollution will impact residents' quality of life partly. This is what we all don't want to meet. How can we do reduce the environmental pollution while holding economic development or avoiding too much impact? The problem is closely related to the benefit of future generations. Also, it plagued various sectors of society. Research on the economic development and environmental pollution is very popular in colleges and universities, and the main contents and methods described herein are as follows.This paper mainly adopts the method of clustering and principal component analysis approach to study the indicators that affect economy and environment. Nine economy development indicators(including GDP, consumption level, gross industrial product, etc.) and six environmental pollution indicators(including wastewater discharge, sulfur dioxide emissions, etc.) from 31 areas were selected in this paper. Firstly, based on the cluster analysis, the two classes of indicators are divided into three categories, so that we will obtain several areas with similar economic development and environmental pollution; then the principal component analysis is carried out on the two classes of indicators, the main factors what influence them are obtained. According to the cumulative contribution rate of each index, the three principal components of the two conditions will be disclosed. At the same time, we will get the expression of their principal components. Secondly, the statics were weighted average, based on the expression of the principal component and the eigenvalues of the index, then it would be ranked under economic and environmental indicators. Finally, a scatter plot could be drawn according to the two points. The 31 regions can be divided into 4 categories by the scatter plot, and the relation between economic development and environmental pollution would appear, then I will analyze the relationship comprehensively and explain it correspondingly, and try to reveal the relationship between the economy and the environment.
